Kewpie Mayonnaise

Sometimes I honestly believe the best kept foodie secret in the world of cooking is Kewpie Mayonnaise! The fact that it is extremely difficult to find could be why no one has ever heard of it … if you don’t have an Oriental Market nearby, then probably your only hope is

What is Kewpie Mayo? Here are some product descriptions I had to really hunt for on the Internet:

“Kewpie Mayonnaise, or Japanese Mayonnaise, is the undisputed king of mayonnaise. First made in Japan in 1925 … this mayo is yellower, richer and more creamy than the standard American or European mayonnaise. Made with rice vinegar, instead of distilled vinegar makes it especially complimentary to Japanese cuisine.”

“According to Kewpie’s official website, mayonnaise was first introduced to Japan in 1925. Since then, Kewpie mayo has been one of the predominant household condiments there. People often use it on vegetables and as a salad dressing. When we wrote about Hellmann’s vs. homemade mayonnaise several of you chimed in to say that you preferred Kewpie to either of the above.”

“Kewpie mayonnaise, the Japanese mayo with a baby on the bottle, which you’ve probably seen in Asian markets, is umami incarnate. It’s no wonder chefs love the stuff. In addition to being a satisfyingly rich, slightly sweet version of the world’s greatest and most versatile sauce, Kewpie gets a serious boost thanks to its kind-of-secret ingredient: Monosodium glutamate. This stuff makes everything taste better.” (Read the entire article at this link.)

Seriously folks … this is the best tasting mayo in the world! Whether it is in deviled eggs, quiche, remoulade sauce, or even tuna fish salad … it just can’t be beat … and that’s coming from a guy who used to buy Hellmann’s by the gallon! After all this praise, there is one caveat that I feel inclined to throw in … like so many oriental food products, Kewpie Mayo contains Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) which causes headaches for some people.
